Message From Our Superintendent

  • WUSD Parents & Guardians,

This past Saturday WUSD district administrators discussed with the Governing Board the option of shifting to a four day school schedule for next school year.  Our initial research has shown that a four day schedule can have a positive impact on teacher recruitment & retention and provide cost savings as well.

Heading into this next year we project that WUSD will need to make approximately $240,000 in budget reductions, and a four day week could cover a large portion of this deficit.  In addition, related to recruitment & retention, the Saddle Mountain Unified School District (Tonopah, AZ) saw an increased teacher retention rate when implementing the four day schedule which increased from 72% to 78%, and this year topped 90%.

At this stage we are working to research the four day week option and will be sharing with the Governing Board our findings on February 14.  To effectively complete this task we need your help.  I have attached a presentation which provides greater detail and concludes with an electronic feedback form.  I would ask that each of you complete the electronic feedback form providing your thoughts, ideas and comments so that we can get a sense of the questions we must research and better understand.  If you prefer to complete a paper feedback form please contact the WUSD District Office at 928-668-5350.

As always I appreciate your assistance and thank you in advance for your participation in helping us with this important decision.

    Best regards,

    Howard C. Carlson, Ed. D.

    Superintendent
