Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I log into my courses and get started?

    Posted by:

Students and parents will receive emails with information on how to get started on the courses. Students can also come into the WVA lab for orientation training. Please contact our office at 928-684-6717 to schedule in-person training. Our curriculum provider, Edgenuity, also has an orientation video as part of the class introduction.

  • Do WVA students participate in state and district testing?

    Posted by:

All students must participate in state and district assessments. Participation in these exams is a condition of enrollment and students who do not participate may be subject to withdrawal from our school. (A.R.S. §15-808)

These assessments provide parents and teachers with valuable information about a student's learning and give us the opportunity to address learning gaps or where to guide a student in their learning journey.

District assessments may be taken from home and will be monitored through our district software. State assessments MUST be taken on one of our approved campus testing sites.

  • What are the technology requirements?

    Posted by:

All students are required to use an internet-connected personal computer or chromebook. Our platform does not work well with phones or tablets. The Google Chrome browser should be used to ensure all features of the curriculum work properly and the student's gsuite school account is being used.

  • How many weeks do students have to complete the courses?

    Posted by:

Students in grades 4-8 have a maximum of 18 weeks (which includes holidays and school breaks) for each semester to complete a semester of their four core classes.

Students in grades 9-12 will have 9 weeks to complete 2–3 classes, depending on how many credits they need. Some classes (electives) may be 18 weeks long, but there are very few of these classes.

Classes can be finished sooner than the set number of weeks if the student puts in extra time to work ahead.

  • How are the courses structured by the teachers?

    Posted by:

Students in grades 4-5 will be assigned to one teacher that will facilitate all four courses. The teacher, student and Learning Coach (family member) will work together as the student works through the courses. The student will not be required to attend live sessions with the teacher, but the teacher will have an open classroom (online) for the student to access during the work schedule. Students can also schedule private, individual meetings with the teacher up to two times a week.

Students in grades 7-12 will be in asynchronous, student-led classes. There are no live meetings or required check-ins for the students. Teachers will be available for virtual meetings as well as grading work, providing feedback, and monitoring progress. The student drives their learning by how much work they put into their education.

  • How much time each week do I need to spend on school?

    Posted by:

The state of Arizona requires varying hours depending on a student's grade level. Young online students in grades 4-5 should spend 25 hours per week, and students in grades 7-12 should spend 25-30 hours per week to maintain full-time status. If you are taking only one course, the requirement is 400 minutes per week. In addition to "attending" school the required length of time each week, students will also need to complete weekly goals and turn in assignments that are due each week to maintain academic progress.

Parents will receive frequent emails and phone calls if their student is not meeting the attendance requirements. If no attendance is submitted for an extended length of time, the student can be withdrawn from school due to "non-attendance".

  • How do parents access their students' grades and performance?

    Posted by:

Parents will be sent weekly emails with their students' grades and class completion/progression. Additionally, parents can have their student log in and show the parent the student dashboard. This is the most accurate, up-to-date data as it changes every time a student completes an assignment or assessment. Grades are updated weekly (on Mondays) in ParentVue but if the student works throughout the week, the grade in ParentVue will not reflect that work until the following week.

  • How do high school students choose their courses?

    Posted by:

After families complete the orientation video and submit the student/parent contract form, WVA Admin will meet with students to go through their transcript and create an academic plan. During this process, students can choose electives based on what is available. After this meeting, courses will be assigned to the student through the Imagine Learning Platform and in ParentVue so parents know what courses their student will be taking.

  • How do final exams work?

    Posted by:

For grades 9-12, at the end of each 9-week block, students will be required to take and pass a final exam with a 60% or higher. These finals are taken in-person at the WVA lab and cover all the standards learned in the course. For detailed information regarding finals, please refer to our handbook (final exam policy) or this final exam policy.

  • How is attendance recorded?

    Posted by:

Each week, as the student completes work in each course, the parents will need to submit attendance minutes through the ParentVue portal.  Parents will receive frequent emails and phone calls if their student is not meeting the attendance requirements. If no attendance is submitted for an extended length of time, the student can be withdrawn from school due to "non-attendance".
